The Hair Freezing Contest originated at Takhini Hot Springs in 2011. The early years of the contest had humble beginnings, with small prize money given to the best frozen hairdo and just a few dozen participants each year. Over the years, the contest gained momentum and in 2015 an image from the contest went viral. Since then, the contest grew with prize money and added several new categories. The contest reached global recognition and we plan to continue this exciting and fun event at Eclipse Nordic Hot Springs. The 2022/23 contest is happening now!
Previously the contest offered five categories: Best Male, Best Female, Best Group, Nongshim’s People’s Choice, and Tim Horton’s Most Creative. The winner for each category received $2000 in addition to an “unlimited” pass for the previous hot springs and some passes for Eclipse once opened. We have added a new category - Best Frozen Facial Hair sponsored by Air North.
The crucial point in the contest is the right weather conditions. Frosty temperatures below -4 °F (-20 °C) are essential. So, some days may not be chilly enough to accomplish the trick. Thanks to the temperature of the hot springs of 104 °F (40 °C), the partakers are safe and warm.
